Everyone has already encountered many calls to adventure in life.
The first was probably your trauma of being born.
But there are different calls to adventure for the different stages of life.
When you are young the future is full of potential and everything in life.
When you were in our early teens you were called upon to move from a position of dependency in your family to that of a responsible adult in society. This may have taken years to accomplish but it happened.
You always need to respond appropriately to the call for that stage you are at, and with the awareness that a refused call to adventure often has bad consequences for you and those who depend on you.
As Joseph Campbell says,
“In the cave you fear to enter,
lies the treasure you seek”
It also good to remember that even if you are in physical bondage it does not mean you cannot be released into another dimension. Dale Carnegie said,
“Two men looked out from prison bars,
One saw the mud, the other saw stars.”
The field of time you call reality can seem to be all about suffering and difficulty, so when you accept that, you can be released by identifying yourself with something beyond this dimension.
You can’t reflect upon yourself unless you have some kind of a mirror to see yourself in.
This mirror is your schedule for your stages through life.
You have to know where you are on that time schedule to know what to expect and how to behave.
There is a time for everything.
It’s your expectation of your stages of life that map out your position and your next steps.
For example, as you approach your forties, experience shows that you may expect to be free, willing, self-responsible and a mature person with ideals of fairness and independence.
So a call to adventure just then would be interpreted in that context. It is often a major event, maybe like a mid-life crisis.
Further on in life, when you are truly old, there really is little future anymore.
So everything we do is focused on today.
And, rather wonderfully, that has a radiance all of its own.
Calls tend to be rather shorter term as a result, and for some people, may be a very high risk because there is nothing to lose any longer!
